What can be used?

We often find bikes that have been thrown out in cleanups because the owner thought it was no use to anyone or even worse they found it was an easy way to clear out their garage. There isn't much than cannot be reused in some form from an old bike. Please consider this should you find yourself with a bike you no longer need. A small effort is all that is needed to send your bike where it can be used. There are numerous organizations listed on the links pages that will happily accept bikes/parts. Should you have difficulty locating your nearest community group, let me know.

Frames - Adult frames can be used to make wheelchairs. Even if the forks are bent, it has no wheels, pedals or seat; it does not matter. Only the back end of the frame is used for this program. Smaller sized frames ican be used to refurbish into a bike for use again.

Seats and Seatposts - How many times has your bike stand not worked and your bike has fallen over and it has torn the seat? We are forever in search of bike seats as often the ones we recieve have tears in them. It is a common occurance. We are always looking for seats and seatposts in good condition especially BMX and old dragster 'banana' seats for the youth programs to utilise. They are very popular amongst teenage children -not to mention adults reliving their youth!

Handlebars and grips - Handlebars commonly come in quite rusty after a bike has been left out in the weather. We can always use these in any style. The most popular are the flat mountain bike style, BMX and high dragster style handlebars. Goosenecks/stems which the handlebars are fitted to are also needed. Handlebar grips are always in short supply.

Bells and Reflectors - We can never get enough of them! It is a requirement for every bike to have a bell fitted and reflectors. Please save us having to purchase these when they are currently being throw away.

Tyres and Tubes - Again this is another added cost for community groups in having to purchase new tyres and tubes. If you have them in good useable condition, dont throw them away! Tubes can be repaired and also used to make chairs and other craft items. So even if torn, they are of use.

Wheels/Rims - Yet another victim of good old rust and commonly found to be damaged when someone has stacked their bike. We can always use rims in any size. Several groups make coffee tables from wheels as well.

Brake levers, Calipers, Cables and Pads - These can all be used providing they are still in useable order. If not, the brake pads can be removed and used providing they have a lot of life left in them. Brake cables can be used if they are not rusty.

Pedals - We are always short of these. They come in two thread sizes and we can use either. -Regardless of the colour or style.

Cranks, Chainring and Bottom Bracket - This is the section that your pedal screws into and the chainring is the round part your chain goes over. Providing they are not damaged we can use them.

Gears and Levers - These can be used. Whether it is simply just the levers or the entire setup; gears, cabling, derailer etc. These parts can be separated should some be damaged.

Forks - Commonly we find someone has had a crash on their bike or run into a gutter whilst trying to be a stuntman. The forks bear the brunt of this and subsequently get bent. We can replace these by fitting replacement forks from our collection of spare parts. So yes we can take them!

Chains - Even if they are no longer useable for a bike, they can be used for various craft activites.

Mudguards and Chainguards - Commonly brought in broken. We need ones we can use!

Carry Racks/Baskets - Seldom found and greatly needed! The rear carry racks and also the front hanging ones come in very handy when carrying goods on a bike.

Know of any other uses? Let me know!
